Introduction
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has commenced the final countdown for the first crewed flight of the Gaganyaan Mission in late 2026. This mission will make India the fourth country in the world—after the Soviet Union, USA, and China—to launch a human into space independently.
What Happened?
Following the successful conclusion of the uncrewed missions (G1 and G2), ISRO has integrated the Human Rated LVM3 (HLVM3) launch vehicle with the Orbital Module. The selected 'Gaganauts', trained extensively in Russia and at ISRO's Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru, have cleared all physiological and simulation tests.
Key Facts
- Objective: To demonstrate human spaceflight capability by launching a crew of 3 members to an orbit of 400 km for a 3-day mission and bringing them back safely to Earth.
- Launch Vehicle: Human Rated LVM3 (formerly GSLV Mk III), consisting of solid stage, liquid core stage, and cryogenic upper stage.
- Orbital Module: Comprises a Crew Module (CM) and a Service Module (SM).
- Vyommitra: A female-looking humanoid robot sent on uncrewed missions to simulate human functions.
Why Is It Important?
Gaganyaan is a cornerstone of India's long-term space vision, laying the groundwork for the proposed Bharatiya Antariksha Station (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and human missions to the Moon by 2040. It will drive advancements in life support systems, space medicine, and advanced materials, yielding substantial socio-economic benefits.
Challenges
Human spaceflight demands near-zero failure rates. Developing the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), crew escape systems, and ensuring precise splashdown and rapid recovery in the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea are highly complex engineering feats.
UPSC Prelims Connection
- LVM3: ISRO's heaviest launch vehicle capable of placing a 4-ton class payload into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
- Crew Escape System (CES): An emergency system designed to quickly pull the crew module away from the launch vehicle in case of an anomaly.
UPSC Mains Connection
GS Paper 3: Evaluate the technological and strategic significance of the Gaganyaan mission for India's space program. How does human spaceflight contribute to national development?
Conclusion
The upcoming crewed Gaganyaan mission represents the zenith of India's indigenous technological capabilities. As ISRO transitions from planetary exploration to human spaceflight, it elevates India's stature as a premier global space power.
