Introduction

In a major boost to digital infrastructure convenience, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launched the OneTag service in September 2026. This service introduces FASTag portability, allowing vehicle owners to switch their FASTag issuer bank without the need to physically replace the RFID sticker on their windshields.

What Happened?

Unveiled by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) on September 11, 2026, the OneTag service officially went live on the Rajmargyatra mobile app on September 17, 2026. The initiative was developed jointly by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Background

FASTag, utilizing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, has revolutionized toll collection in India by enabling automatic deduction of toll charges. However, until now, if a user was dissatisfied with their issuer bank's services, they had to physically peel off the old tag, cancel the account, and purchase a new tag. OneTag brings a "mobile number portability" (MNP) style solution to the FASTag ecosystem.

Key Facts

  • Platform: The service is accessible via the NHAI's official Rajmargyatra app.
  • Process: Users authenticate via a Mobile Verification Code (MVC), select a new bank, and complete KYC and wallet onboarding digitally.
  • Cooling Period: To prevent misuse, there is a mandatory six-month cooling period between portability requests.
  • Balance Transfer: The old wallet is closed by the previous issuer, and the remaining balance is refunded.

Why Is It Important?

This initiative represents a mature phase of India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). By empowering consumers with choice, it fosters competition among banks to provide better customer service. For UPSC aspirants, this relates to GS Paper 3 (Infrastructure: Roads, Digital Infrastructure, and Technology integration) and GS Paper 2 (e-Governance).

Challenges

The primary challenges involve the seamless backend settlement between the old and new issuer banks, especially concerning the refund of remaining wallet balances and security deposits. Ensuring data privacy during the KYC transfer process over the NPCI network is also a critical operational hurdle.

Way Forward

As the OneTag system stabilizes, NHAI must ensure robust grievance redressal mechanisms for failed transactions during the transition phase. Furthermore, expanding this interoperability to parking facilities and fuel payments will maximize the utility of the FASTag ecosystem.

UPSC Prelims Connection

  • Implementing Agencies: IHMCL and NPCI.
  • Technology: FASTag operates on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
  • Application: Portability is executed through the Rajmargyatra app.

UPSC Mains Connection

GS Paper 3: "Digital integration in physical infrastructure is key to improving governance and citizen services." Discuss this statement in the context of the FASTag ecosystem and the newly introduced OneTag portability service.

Conclusion

OneTag is a prime example of user-centric digital governance. By eliminating the physical replacement of tags, NHAI has reduced plastic waste, saved consumer time, and significantly enhanced the interoperability of India's digital tolling network.
